On August 3, 2005, 43 rail cars went of the tracks beside Lake Wabamun in Alberta, spilling oil into the lake and resulting in a major environmental, social and economic disaster. The response of various levels of government to the incident was characterized by delay, confusion, inadequacy of equipment and inability to coordinate efforts.
